Writing a Good CV 101

Curriculum Vitae is a detailed document highlighting your professional and academic history. Your role is to Summarize your experience/professional history, education, skills, self selling and achievements.

How important is a CV?

  • To attract your qualities and to persuade the employer to invite you for an interview (first impression)
  • Your self-marketing tools/branding.
  • To inform the employer about your personal details like education,work experience,skills and interests (Self-selling).

The aim of a CV is to get an interview for a specific job for which you have applied.

Here are some tips regarding general spacing and formatting of your CV:

  • Choose your font types and font sizes! Use good type font to make it easier to read, and make sure it’s not to small or too big
  • Give some space! There will be so many CV applicants, so make yours easy to read, don’t make it to tight and compact
  • Be Creative! Use a good color combination and make your arrangement simple but still interesting.
  • Don’t use the wrong photo

After creating your CV, you need to pay attention when emailing the recruiter, here are some things to note:

  • It’s better to supplement your resume with a cover letter.
  • Do not forget to add the subject related to the job you want apply in your email.
  • Do not forget to provide the body email.
  • Do not forget to double check

So, what is actually in a CV?

What to include in your CV:

1. Personal Details

This includes name, phone, email, Linkedin Profile, location, DoB

2. Personal Profile

Make sure you can get the immediate attention of the recruiter. Mention your degree and years of work experience and describe your strongest provable traits. 

3. Education

Put your last/second last education only. You also need to write your GPA score.

4. Work Experience

In this section you need to:

  • Write your work experience from newest to last experience
  • Write your position, company name, start date & end date
  • Tell us about your job description!
  • and also achievements regarding your job!

5. Organization Experience

  • Write your organization experience from newest to last experience,
  • If you have many experiences, just put your top 3 organization experience,
  • Put organization related to your job position that you want to apply.

6. Achievements

Tell the recruiter about your achievements that relates to the job you want to apply.

7. Certifications/Training/Portofolio

Tell the recruiter about your training or certifications that relates to job you want to apply.

8. Skills

Here are some do’s and don’ts when writing a CV


  • Place the important information up-front.
  • Put experience and education achievements in reverse chronological order starting with your current job and working backwards.
  • Use a clear, uncluttered layout, without too many design elements
  • Tailor your CV to the job
  • Give a brief describe of the companies that you worked for


  • Include salary information and expectations. Leave this for negotiations after your interview.
  • Include all of the experience or achievements you have had since kindergartner, just the relevant ones.
  • Reduce the font size or reduce the margins to get more information in.
  • Don’t “fake it till you make it”- employers have ways of checking what you put is true.
